A look behind the scenes

Lake Zug has stories to tell – and we are listening. Every month, we take you behind the scenes, to where our stories come from.

In this way, Schifffahrt creates a platform for regional service providers.

Joel de Buren, Head of Marketing and Sustainability Manager at Zug Tourism, talks about projects, partners and Zug's positioning as a committed, sustainable destination.

What are the opportunities and challenges for sustainable tourism in Zug?
We see that sustainability is something guests want – even in the business sector. This offers potential for positioning Zug as a sustainable destination. At the same time, businesses lack the resources for sustainable implementation due to a shortage of skilled workers. Our Sustainability Summit provides input and opportunities for exchange: hoteliers, restaurateurs, event venues and shipping companies network and see that it is possible to move forward together in small steps.

How is sustainability implemented in everyday tourism?
Zug Tourism is reducing its own carbon footprint, conducting employee training and involving guests and locals through surveys. One concrete lever for reducing the ecological footprint is the Zug Card for free use of public transport. We also offer an interactive map with information on barrier-free locations in Zug in collaboration with Pro Infirmis. A flagship project such as the new electric boat on Lake Ägeri is also very important, of course.

What sets Zug apart from other destinations?
Sustainability is strategically anchored in our organisation – which is not a given – and visible to guests: we showcase what businesses have to offer, from Minergie buildings and solar panels to local partnerships. Other particularly attractive features include the mix of city and pure nature in a small area and the good public transport connections.

What role do partners such as Zugersee Schifffahrt play?
A central one: with Swisstainable Level 3 – Leading, the shipping company is a role model for other businesses. They are a prime example of how sustainability can be rethought – and they bring local content to the water with special trips such as the Salsa Ship, Literature Ship and culinary cruises. In this way, the shipping company creates a platform for regional service providers.

What will Zug look like as a sustainable destination in five years?
Our goal is free public transport all year round. We also want to strengthen the theme of inclusion – for example with barrier-free offers such as city and art tours.
