Benj Schacht on Swisstainable

Behind the Swisstainable Label Level III are many small steps that add up to a great deal - from the regional menu to fuel-saving navigation. Operations manager Benj Schacht on responsible shipping operations

Diesel ships operate on Lake Zug. Diesel and the environment – how do they go together?
We have been using eco-diesel for three years – a much cleaner product that is produced in a much more refined way than conventional diesel. This allows us to demonstrably reduce soot emissions by 18 to 20 per cent. At the same time, the machine is spared, which also saves resources.

What other measures contribute to more efficient operation?
We have adapted the timetable so that the ships can constantly operate in an optimal performance range. This means no constant acceleration and deceleration, but smooth, steady travelling at the ideal speed. This allows the engines to work particularly efficiently. We travel at an average speed of 20 kilometres per hour – this not only slows down the operation, but also the atmosphere on board. We want our guests to enjoy a relaxed journey.

Have you also changed the way the engines are supplied?
We used to let the engines idle for up to half an hour in the morning to carry out test manoeuvres and bring the engines up to operating temperature. Today, we do this in a more targeted way: the test run still takes place, but we switch off afterwards until we actually cast off. This reduces the operating hours – and saves fuel.

You also pay attention to clean electricity. What does that look like?
At all of our jetties, both on Lake Zug and Lake Aegeri, we only use 100 per cent hydroelectricity from WWZ.

How are you looking to the future?
We are constantly monitoring the market very closely and are well networked. Of course, we are interested in new drive technologies such as batteries, hydrogen and hybrid solutions. Sooner or later, conversions or new engines will be on the agenda – then we will decide which technology makes the most sense for our ships and their intended use.
